My Journey From Zero To Professional Freelance Content Writer
My Journey From Zero To Professional Freelance Content Writer
In the year 2013, I was pursuing my engineering degree. Let me admit frankly that I absolutely had no idea about being a freelance content writer. Since those were the time we were working hard to find an innovative project idea, I came across 3D printing technology. The whole concept fascinated me. One of my close friends suggested me to write blogs about 3D printing technology. So that it would be the star element of CV while finding a job in the near future.
Phase 1: First time I learned about blogging and freelance content writer job?
Initially, I did not take my friend’s advice seriously. My interest was totally towards the 3D printing technology. As a result, I consumed a lot of knowledge and every industry trend was at the tip of my tongue. After almost 4 months, my friend reminded me about his blogging advice. Alright! It was the time to explore what’s blogging.
Time to learn what is blogging.
It took a couple of hours for me to grasp the overview of blogging. Of course, I did not go too deep on the technical aspect of blogging, search engine optimization, keyword research, digital marketing, etc. Keeping the basics in mind, I decided to share my knowledge about 3D printing technology. But how and where? This is my next question!
Time to learn what is website, domain, and hosting.
To start with blogging, one needs to decide the right internet platform. It can be third-party sites like Blogspot or own website. Initially, I decided to get started with Blogspot but I was stopped by my friend from the computer science department. He admitted to help me out with WordPress website development and also will be using it as his college mini project. However, I was completely okay with this idea.
Now, I had to choose a domain name for the website. So, without thinking much I said let it be something related 3D printing. He researched for all the available domain names and gave me a list of options. We decided it to be www.grab3dprintingknowledge.com. (Now, the domain is no longer existing under my authority!) Within a week’s time, the WordPress website with a decent design was ready. He gave me the ID and password credentials for WordPress login. In addition, helped me to understand how to write blog posts in WordPress. Trust me! It was so easy to learn. I was ready to write the next day.
Time to start writing blogs.
The first thing I did was listing out all the topics I learned about 3D printing. Without a second thought, I began writing one after the other. In the span of 10 days, 30 blogs were ready. I just did not bother about any technical stuff and all my knowledge got transformed into a written document under different headings. That’s it! I never knew that every professional freelance content writer must begin his or her career by having a set of high-quality blogs.
I had no clue about what to do next!
The only thing I had in mind was to use my blogging site as a portfolio for my job search. However, I started applying for jobs with this portfolio in hand. Something went wrong and did not get an expected response from the companies. Almost in the mid of 2013, I got a mail from a robotic training center. The summary of the mail was like this –
I came across your blogging website and profile from Naukri. As of now, we are not dealing with the R&D projects of 3D printing in India. But, we are using 3D printing technology for supporting our robotics training classes.
After looking at your interest in the domain, we have a job opening for website content writer. Reply to this mail if you are interested to take up this opportunity.
I had applied for the job in R&D department but I received an unexpected opportunity!
Phase 2: My Decision Of Taking Up Career In Freelance Writing Jobs
After I received the mail, the first thing I did was intense research on job opportunities in the 3D printing industry in India. The moment I realized the scope was too low, I opened up for the freelance writing jobs opportunity and replied with YES to the mail. That was the first step in my freelance content writer profession. If you are thinking how to be a freelance writer then my suggestion is – choose your subject of interest or niche as a first step. If you do this, it will be easy to find online writing jobs. In my case, 3D printing was my subject of interest which was the primary reason to get a job. Of course, you can expand the number of interests. But, make sure you begin with one.
My actual start as a professional freelance content writer
I was still pursuing my bachelor’s degree when I received website content writer opportunity from robotics training company. So, I use to work for them in part-time. It was not possible for me to explore the technical side of the content writing career. As days passed by, I decided to take up this career seriously. Consequently, I needed to prepare my resume for freelance writing jobs online.
How did I prepare for freelance writing jobs?
As I worked for a robotics company, it influenced me to develop an interest in the education niche. So, on the same website, I started writing the blogs on education niche. Since my friend became busy with his academics, I had to learn the basics of WordPress. As a result, I prepared a set of blog posts to showcase my writing skills in the form of a blogging website.
When I researched the qualification required for freelance writing jobs, Most of the companies expected the candidate to have WordPress skills and SEO skills. So, I needed to learn all the required skills to get started as a professional freelance content writer. So, I had to take up a few paid courses and consumed a lot of knowledge from youtube videos. By the time I complete my graduation in the mid-year 2016, I had a well-built resume in hand along with my online portfolio. (WordPress Website).

In the month of October 2014, I got a content writing job online from an education product based company. They wanted me to write SEO optimized blogs for their website. I was extremely happy to be part of it. Since the company was too far from my residence location, I was asked to work from home and attend only weekly meetings. This helped me to find other freelance writing jobs to work parallelly.
As a passionate blogger, I started my career in digital marketing as a Freelance SEO Content Writer in 2013. Later from the mid of 2015, I worked as a full-time Content Marketer for 2 companies.
